Halloween Advent Calender Project

I love advent calendars.  Last year I borrowed a cute pattern from my mother to make a Christmas advent calendar.  I've always wanted a Halloween count down calendar, but didn't like any of the ideas I would find when searching the internet.  I decided to make my own.  This drawing is my crude sketch of what I envisioned, a crazy quilted background and pumpkin with little ornaments to hang.

Here is the quilt top.  The first one I made I actually tried sewing the random pieces of fabric together and it was awful.  Things weren't straight and the fabric had bulges.  I didn't know what I was doing and it didn't work.  So for the second try I decided to just use the applique sticky adhesive stuff and iron the pieces together.  It turned out much better I think.  I decided not to piece the pumpkin because I had this great piece of orange fabric.  I thought the fence looked kind of cute and helped anchor the divide between sky and field.

Here are all the ornaments to go on the calendar.  I just need to attach little hangers from embroidery floss and they are good to go.  This pink fabric is actually the back of the quilt.  I picked a sacrificial scrap to use for the back since no one gets to see it except in this picture.  I plan to quilt around the large pumpkin and then sew 30 buttons on the quilt top as the rest of the quilting.  It may not be enough so I might have to quilt the fence of something.

These pieces were so cute, but too big to be ornaments on the calender.  So I am going to make special ornaments from these and put them on the wreath I have on my door.  Very festive I think.

Here is what the finished project will look like.  I made my own binding out of the fence material.  I think it looks like witch stocks.  I'm so glad there was enough.  Now to quilt it and finish the binding, then finish the ornaments with some hot glue and it is ready.  So excited for Fall!

I have a special way of sewing on the binding if you haven't done that already. Bring it with you when you come to visit and I'll show you how. Then you can stitch it down on the way home.
